Welcome to Learn to Sail at the CYC!.
Please Note: During a two week period, students MAY be able to complete the qualifications for one CANSail level and start toward the qualifications of the next level. This is dependent on several factors including, but not limited to: class size, weather conditions, and each student’s ability.
This is a combined class – CANSail 1 and CANSail 2 (CS 1, CS 2). CANSail 1 is an introduction to sailing for children aged 9 to 16. The course is instructed in dinghies with the emphasis on safety, fun, and seamanship. CANSail 1/2 is ideal for returning CS 1 students and recent graduates from CS 1. The first part of the course is re-capturing skills from last year. The course is instructed in dinghies, with students advancing through more complex craft and situations. A strong theoretical knowledge is combined with matching “on-water” practical experience and skill development. Graduates of the CANSail 2 program are competent sailors and are capable of racing in Club races. Courses run Monday through Friday 9:00am to 4:00pm. Courses will be run given adequate student registration and availability of an instructor. Students registering for additional classes in 2025 will receive a 5% discount on the advertised price of the next class.
Refer to the course Waiver for information about the CYC refund policy.
COVID SAFETY: While we are hopeful that 2025 will continue with more "normalized" activities, we will be carefully monitoring the current situation regarding COVID. Any safety requirements will be established in adherence with the local district health region directions. Parents/guardians will be apprised of protocols, should they be required, closer to the beginning of the sailing season.

CANSail 3 and 4 are also instructed in dinghies, with students advancing through more complex craft and situations. A strong theoretical knowledge is combined with matching “on-water” practical experience and skill development. Graduates of the CanSail 3/4 program are fully competent sailors and are capable of racing in local regattas. The WetFeet (beginner, ages 8 to 10, must turn 8 before the class starts or during the class) level is intended to be a fun introduction to sailing in a day camp environment for the younger student. It will include activities both on and off the water. Programs are, generally, Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 4:00 pm. Students may complete their WetFeet certification in one week. Courses will be run given adequate student registration and an available instructor.
